The International Police Association was established in January of 1950 by Sergeant Arthur Troop of Lincolnshire, England. The IPA was formed as an association of active and retired police officers for social interaction on a worldwide scale.

The association's motto is "Servo per Amikeco" which, translated in English, means "Service Through Friendship."

The association has a membership of over 312,000 officers in 58 countries worldwide.
